Originally from Upstate New York, Ms. Joanna McGowan has called San Diego home for the past 27 years and lives in Encinitas.
Joanna earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Babson College in Wellesley, MA. Before transitioning into special education, she spent 20 years working in non-profit fundraising and endurance event production.
Her lifelong interest in teaching led her to begin working in education in 2017 as a substitute special education teacher and instructional assistant across North County districts. This is where her passion for special education grew, leading her to pursue her Education Specialist Credential (Mild to Moderate Support Needs) through San Diego State University. She has supported students in both elementary and middle school settings, having taught in Del Mar Union School District and San Dieguito Union High School District.
Ms. McGowan believes students learn best in environments where they feel safe, supported, and encouraged to take academic risks. Ms. McGowan focuses on building strong relationships, capitalizing on each student’s strengths, and partnering with families and colleagues to support each child’s growth and success. She supports 7th and 8th grade scholars at JCS Mountain Oaks and TK-12th grade scholars at JCS Cedar Cove.
Outside of the classroom, Ms. McGowan enjoys reading and spending time outdoors, especially near the ocean or on local trails.
